Why walkie-talkies and group texts fall short
Walkie-talkie chatter is heard by everyone in the room, whether or not the message is meant for them. Group texts have no concept of who's actually with a patient right now, no acknowledgment, and nothing stopping a message from landing at the worst possible moment. Neither one was built for a clinical office's pace — or its privacy requirements.
What WhisPager actually does
End-to-end encrypted
Messages are sealed on the sending device before they ever leave it. The broker and any relay only ever handle ciphertext — never the message itself.
Private audio, never the speaker
Announcements only ever play through a headset or earbuds a staff member has personally approved — never the phone or Watch's built-in speaker, no exceptions.
Hands-free acknowledgment
Respond to a message with a quick spoken phrase via Siri — no gloves off, no phone out of a pocket.
Do Not Disturb is honored, not overridden
A staff member marked unavailable simply isn't sent to — enforced on the server, not just hidden in the app. No message is ever forced through.
Runs on your own network
A self-hosted broker on office-owned hardware — no cloud account holding your practice's messages. Between devices on-site, traffic stays on your network. Alerting a phone whose screen is locked uses Apple's notification service, as every iPhone app must — and it still only ever carries ciphertext.
iPhone, Watch, and front-desk PC
The same encrypted network reaches shared front-desk and operatory workstations, not just personal devices.
Built for coordination, not for waking someone at 2am
Some healthcare messaging tools exist to override silence — an on-call physician who has to be reached for a true emergency, no matter what. That's a real and different problem, and it calls for an alert that forces its way through Do Not Disturb until someone acknowledges it.
WhisPager is built for a more everyday problem: keeping a practice's front desk, hygienists, and assistants coordinated during the workday. "The patient in room 3 is ready" isn't a life-or-death page — and treating it like one, forcing it through no matter what someone's doing, just teaches staff to tune every alert out. So here, Do Not Disturb means Do Not Disturb: a message to someone unavailable is never forced through, and the sender is told right away so they can reach someone else instead.
Not what we are
An on-call escalation or emergency-paging system that overrides silence for true clinical emergencies.
What we are
A private, hands-free way to keep a practice's staff coordinated during the day, with Do Not Disturb enforced, not overridden.
On privacy & compliance
WhisPager is built with HIPAA's technical safeguards in mind — end-to-end encryption, minimal message retention, and server-side access controls. It is not itself a substitute for your practice's own HIPAA compliance program, and we're not yet claiming formal compliance certification. Ask us for specifics before relying on this for PHI.
